THE CHALLENGE

How do you recreate some of the most iconic album covers in music history… in less than 8 hours??!

Welcome to The Tribute: Battle of the Bands.

One of the Netherlands’ biggest television shows on SBS6, where legendary artists are brought back to life by the country’s best tribute bands.

For 5 seasons, I worked as the graphic designer behind the show’s high pressure finale visuals: recreating famous album covers that had to look instantly recognizable on national television.

Think:
David Bowie.
U2.
AC/DC.
The Eagles.

No pressure, right?

THE GOAL

Every tribute act needed a visual transformation that felt authentic enough to trigger instant recognition from thousands of viewers at home.

Not “inspired by” or “similar to”, as identical as possible.

The challenge?
Creating high-end cover artwork within television production speed.

Together with celebrity photographer William Rutten, lighting specialist Michiel Fischer, my graphic designer bestie Boukje from Goin’ Nuts and the production team, we had just one shoot day to produce and finalize multiple professional cover recreations from scratch.

Which meant:

  • researching typography,
  • analyzing original artwork,
  • guiding the photoshoots,
  • directing compositions,
  • building missing elements,
  • retouching at high speed
  • and delivering broadcast-ready visuals before the live finale aired.

THE CONCEPT

This project was about more than Photoshop. It was visual problem solving under pressure.

Sometimes styling pieces were missing. Hair and makeup weren’t always identical enough. Or reality needed an extra push to fully sell the illusion.

That’s where I came in.

From digitally reconstructing hairstyles to creating missing props, makeup details and visual effects in post-production: my role was making sure the final image looked believable enough for television.

A David Bowie lightning bolt? I could create it digitally. Missing hair volume? Photoshop.

The goal was always the same: Make viewers forget they were looking at a tribute act for a second.

THE VISUALS

Over the years, I created:

• iconic album cover recreations
• advanced television retouching
• high-speed compositing work
• typography matching & artwork reconstruction
• realistic Photoshop transformations
• visual effects for broadcast television
• print-perfect graphics under live production deadlines

All created while surrounded by cameras, production crews, stylists, makeup artists and the pressure of the strict deadline on national television.

Which honestly makes this one of the most intense creative workflows imaginable.

THE RESULTS

For 5 seasons, the production team trusted me as the graphic designer behind the show’s finale visuals.

Together, we delivered television-ready artwork under extreme deadlines while recreating some of music history’s most recognizable imagery for prime time TV.

Because when millions of people instantly recognize the reference… you know the illusion worked.
